    Hexavalent Chromium

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is one of the valence states (+6) of the element chromium. It is usually produced by an industrial process. Cr(VI) is known to cause cancer. In addition, it targets the respiratory system, kidneys, liver, skin and eyes. Chromium metal is added to alloy steel to increase hardenability and corrosion resistance. A major source of worker exposure to Cr(VI) occurs during "hot work" such as welding on stainless steel and other alloy steels containing chromium metal. Cr(VI) compounds may be used as pigments in dyes, paints, inks, and plastics. It also may be used as an anticorrosive agent added to paints, primers, and other surface coatings. The Cr(VI) compound chromic acid is used to electroplate chromium onto metal parts to provide a decorative or protective coating. https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/hexavalentchromium/index.html

A number of shops and work areas at AFW/TAESL had tested above the action level for Hexavalent Chromium and were placed under medical monitoring per OSHA(CFR29-1910.1026). In 2012 when AFW was shut down, and in 2015 when TAESL suffered the same fate, some employees that were under the OSHA mandated Medical Monitoring had not received an exit exam prior to being displaced or separating from the company. TWU Safety is working with AA Corporate Safety to identify and notify those individuals. Some of you may have received a certified letter last week with instructions.

In a recent AD System Safety Meeting at FSU the company acknowledged that any member who has a concern with possible contamination to Hexavalent Chromium can be tested. The company is contacting previous employees who have reported exposure but the safety team explained there are many members that never filed or had an exit exam. We are urgently advising, if you feel you may have been exposed and wish to be tested please send info to the Local 567 Safety Chairman.

OSHA Fact Sheet explaining health effects and possible symptoms of Hexavalent Chromium exposure attached.

Please contact Tony Cava. Include in the info your name, employee number, station and Title group as well as Shops you were assigned to.
