Federal mask mandate: What team members need to know

    3 minute read

The White House recently issued an executive order directing federal agencies to take swift action to require masks during travel on public transportation, including on aircraft and in airports.

Over the weekend, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) released additional details about this federal mandate, which takes effect at midnight tonight.

Here are a few important details for team members to know.

    What is changing:

    • Individuals who refuse to wear a mask may be subject to penalties under federal law.
    • Customers with disabilities who are unable to wear a mask are asked to notify the Special Assistance team at least 72 hours prior to departure to request an exemption from the requirement. Exemptions will require:
      • Documentation from a licensed health care provider
      • Proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within three calendar days of departure or proof of recovery from COVID-19
    • Bandanas and gaiters will no longer be considered acceptable mask types.

    What is not changing:

    • As before, masks are required at the airport and on board the aircraft. This applies to customers and to team members, including while you are at work or while traveling using your travel privileges.
    • American’s policies for team members who work outside of an airport environment (such as Skyview Campus, Base Maintenance locations, etc.) are unchanged.
    • Children under the age of two years old will continue to be exempt.
    • Individuals are still permitted to remove a mask for a brief period to eat or drink.

More information on the federal mask mandate for transportation is available on CDC's website.
